League getting back to nearly full programme

FOR the first time for several weeks there was virtually a full programme of league games, the only fixture to be postponed being Vine Inn United's Notts Minor Cup Round Four tie away to Beeston Athletic.

Gainsborough and District Sunday Football League

During the enforced break the management committee of the league have had to deal with the resignation of Gainsborough Trinity Supporters Club from Division One.

This follows the resignation of Epworth Town in October and leaves only eight teams to compete in the top division of the league.

Clubs resigning from the league once the season has started is a phenomenon that began as long ago as 1994 and has happened every season since.

A club taking this course of action is fined and the registered players cannot play for another team until the fine is paid.

The fine is meant to be a deterrent but unfortunately it does not seem to be so, leaving the league with little option but to substantially increase the fine for resignation in line with other leagues in the area.

Two matches were played in Division One and both were high scoring affairs.

Friendship have moved to the top after beating bottom club Bryndale FC 9-0 and have yet to concede a goal in league games, while MUSC moved into second place with an 8-0 win over Bridon Sports.

In Division Two, Friendship Old Boys led Reindeer Inn 4-0 at half-time but the second half was a different matter as Reindeer reduced the arrears to 4-3 but failed to score a fourth which would have earned them a point.

Also in this division, White Hart United seemed to be on the way to only their second victory of the season as they led fellow strugglers Vine Inn 3-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

But disaster struck as White Hart made glaring defensive errors allowing Vine Inn to score three times and claim all three points.

In Division Three, Kings Arms made it 11 victories out of 12 when they defeated a youthful FC Babworth Road 6-0 and they now have 33 points and lead the division by 11 points.

Sherwood Rangers have moved up to second place following a narrow 3-2 win over Elkesley, while Grove Mill improved their mid-table position with a 3-1 win over Sun Inn Everton.

Division Four leaders Friendship Over 35s remain unbeaten following their 3-0 win over Midtown United with Pete Lytollis, Neil Farrow and Phil Robinson on the scoresheet.

The Lincolnshire County Sunday Cup Round Four tie between Real Ropery and Winteringham was eventually played after six postponements and resulted in a 7-3 victory for Winteringham.

Flying Scotsman had no better luck in their Notts Sunday Cup Round Four tie at Nottingham against the holders Clumber, losing 3-0, all the goals being conceded in the last 10 minutes.

Mattersey and White Lion have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Notts Minor Cup with wins over Leverton United and East Markham, respectively.
