Leaders sit out a week
THE championship race took a back seat this week with Scotter 1 and Melrose having simultaneous sit-outs.
Beckingham missed the chance to catch up when their green was declared unfit ahead of the match with North Wheatley.
Misterton’s aspirations suffered a serious setback with a shock 10-0 (90-53) defeat at Scotter 2, which in the long run damages their Kelsey Cup hopes, while Scotter 2 are now serious Kelsey Cup candidates.
Marshalls A lost at home to Owston Ferry as they won the aggregate but lost three rinks, the final score being 4-6 (72-67).
The rink of Roy Enever, Phil Freeman and Colin Bilton won 26-7 for the A team.
This was an average result for Marshalls A and raised the previously unthinkable question as to whether they will qualify for the Kelsey Cup.
At the bottom Marshalls Sports showed that they don’t belong there by winning 10-0 (82-67) at Rose A while their hosts demonstrated exactly the opposite.
The same can be said of Marton GB v Lincoln Co-op.
Here was a game that Marton should have won against struggling Co-op, but Co-op comfortably won 8-2 (80-61) to move off the bottom.
In the Millennium Trophy (six players at home and six away simultaneously) Rose A were shock easy 67-46 winners against Beckingham.
Scotter 1 demolished Marton GB 100-39 and Melrose easily beat Scotter 2 76-38.
The phrase ‘descended into farce’ could have been invented for the North Wheatley versus Marshalls Sports match.
First, the Sports players went to Scotter and, realising their mistake, rushed to Wheatley and played a full match.
But, worse still, the Marshalls home players stopped playing after two ends because of light rain and never re-started.
The two sets of players hadn’t organised to communicate with one another and so the whole match has to be replayed.
It must be pointed out that players at Melrose and Rose A, less than a mile away, put on their waterproofs and carried on playing.
In the Pairs Knockout Ray Hammond and Ray Robinson beat Alan Revill and Howard Fields 31-4 and in the Ladies Singles Pam West (Co-op) went to Ferry to play Shirley Smith and came away a 21-3 winners.
