Gainsborough Trinity prepare for FA Trophy semi final at Wrexham FC

TRINITY boss Steve Housham says he hopes his players can make ‘the whole town proud’ as they prepare for the first FA Trophy semi-final in the club’s history.

Housham’s men will travel to North Wales for the first leg of the semi on Saturday against Blue Square Premier high-fliers Wrexham.

The Dragons are currently second in their division and hopeful of a promotion back to the Football League for the first time since their relegation in 2008.

That was the first time the club had been out of the league in 87 years, and Housham is in no doubt about the standard of opposition Trinity are facing.

“They are flying high in their division and are a massive club,” he told the Standard. “It is not going to be easy and it’s a huge hurdle to clear.”

“But you couldn’t have a bigger carrot at the end of it than playing at Wembley Stadium. It’s a massive opportunity for us.”

Trinity warmed up for the clash with a 3-1 league win away at Droylesden on Saturday and Housham insists the FA Trophy is no distraction to the club’s play off hopes.

“It’s always tricky playing Droylesden and you need to be mentally prepared to win there,” he said.

“But we came through it with flying colours. There’s no distraction as far as I’m concerned between the league and cup competitions. They’re just games of football which we will go out and try to win.”

After Saturday’s first leg at the Racecourse Ground, Trinity have an away league game at Histon ahead of the second leg at the Northolme.

“There was that bit of a buzz around town ahead of the quarter final,” Housham said. “And I’m sure it will be the same for the second leg. We’re looking forward to it and hope we can do the whole town proud by making it to Wembley.”

Saturday’s game, which kicks off at 12.45pm, will be shown live on S4C.

Tickets for the second leg at the Northolme will be on sale on Thursday (14th February) 9am-6pm, Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-1pm, from the State Club, Church Street, Gainsborough.
