First victory for Lea

Burton and Dyson Evening League

Upton-cum-Kexby v Lea Park

ON Wednesday night Lea Park picked up their first win of the season, at Upton-cum-Kexby.

Lea travelled the short distance for the Division Three match and, after losing the toss, were asked to field.

Opening bowlers Paul Marriott and Ross Macleod bowled a good line and length and were unlucky on several occasions not to pick up a wicket.

In the seventh over a bowling change was made with Nick Boulton replacing Macleod, and he should have taken a wicket when he had the opener Andy Orton caught behind from a sharp catch from Andrew Tucker but the umpire failed to hear the nick, much to Lea Park’s dismay.

At the other end, Marriott’s impressive bowling brought him a wicket when he removed the stumps of Birkett.

Unfortunately, this was the only success the Lea bowlers had as Orton, relishing his second life, sent the ball flying to all parts of the ground.

At the end of the 18 overs Upton had amassed a total of 142, with Orton making 77, Marriott the pick of Lea bowlers with 1 for 14.

In reply, Lea got off to a bad start when Martin Hymers was bowled for five with the score on 13.

This brought Tucker to the crease to join Elton Moulds, and the pair began to gradually pile the runs up and had put on 36 when Moulds fell, caught off the bowling off Alsop.

Andrew Whiteley joined Tucker in the run chase and kept up with the run rate, but with the game reaching a tight finish Tucker fell for 35.

New player Callum Douce was sent back after his first ball and Henry Willoughby was also sent back to the pavilion quickly to suddenly leave Lea reeling.

With 34 needed off the final three overs Lea seemed to be out of the game.

However, Marriott joined Whiteley at the wicket, and the former produced a magnificent batting display, showing complete distain to the Upton bowlers with a couple of huge sixes and, with the score tied, Marriott smashed his third huge six to win the game and finish on 23 not out after facing just nine balls, assisted by Whiteley on 26 not out.

Lea captain Andy Tucker was immensely proud of the team.
