This time, their victory came in the Millennium Trophy, and it was no fluke because they sailed home comfortably by 16 shots to confirm their terrific improvement this season.

In the same competition, Marshall A made hard work of what seemed to be a straightforward task against Marton GB. They were grateful that Bill Turner, Alan Crookes and Ray Hargreaves won 25-4 because they struggled on the other three rinks before finalising a 67-53 victory.

Beckingham were also given a fight by North Wheatley before just winning all four rinks for a 70-50 win, while Melrose licked Rose Leisure 73-36 after taking the two home rinks by 15 shots and the two away rinks by 22 shots.

In the league, the highlight of three previously rained-off fixtures was an epic battle between Melrose SSC and Beckingham that was only settled on the last wood. Melrose did take three of the rinks, but the dominant 30-11 victory of Beckingham trio, Bill Bryan, Roger Platts and Peter Cawthorne, on the other one gave them a headache. It all left Denise Pilkington standing on the mat with the final bowl of the match. She missed and Melrose sighed with relief to win 8-1 (77 shots to 76).

Meanwhile Scotter beat Marshall Sports 7-3 (89 shots to 44), while Marton GB celebrated their first league win, 8-2 (89 shots to 47), after dismal performances from most of Rose Leisure’s players.
