Cricket: Marshalls go top

A NINTH consecutive victory, this time over Kiveton, saw Marshalls 1sts go top of The Championship on Saturday by virtue of most wins for the first time in the club's history.

Skipper van den Heuvel lost the toss and Kiveton elected to bat with opening batsmen Ward and Hadley soon into their stride as Andrews and Hearn failed to get the early breakthrough.

The score had reached 75 in the 16th over before Hadley chipped Hearn to cover where Blood took the catch.

Kiveton captain Cartwright joined Ward and the pair added 27 before the introduction of Ahmed saw the captain caught well by Hearn at slip.

With Gary Andrews also entering the attack, the spin twins started to put a squeeze on the batsmen with very few loose deliveries and only quick singles on offer.

This led to Ward trying to accelerate and being caught in the deep off Andrews.

Grainger and Dutton added a patient 45 until a rush of blood from the former saw him easily stumped by Alderson again off Andrews to leave Kiveton 154-4 with 11 overs left.

The spinners then came into their own as six wickets fell for 56, Andrews finishing with 4-52 and Ahmed 4-50 as Kiveton were bowled out in the last over for 210.

The Marshalls reply began well with the captain and Tom Brooks batting sensibly before Brooks played on for 16 with the score on 69.

Whitlam joined his captain and the pair added 64 before Whitlam was adjudged lbw for 31.

Tom Lane came in and the partnership added 29 before Lane was caught behind for 17 leaving Marshalls needing 49 from 12 overs.

The in-form Deacon joined his captain and some big hitting saw them pass the required total with van den Heuvel finishing on 91 not out and Deacon unbeaten on 22 to give Marshalls a fairly convincing seven-wicket victory with five overs to spare.

Everton v Lea Park

ON Saturday Lea Park travelled to local rivals and league leaders Everton and after winning the toss decided to bat.

Openers Elton Moulds and Chris Needham quickly imposed themselves on Everton's bowling and the pair put on a solid base of 91 runs before Needham fell for 41.

Ian Elliott joined Moulds and the pair added 30 runs before Moulds fell for a fine 64.

Andy Dewick wasted no time in getting off the mark and the partnership with Elliott was going well until a mix-up resulted in Elliott being run out for 35.

Unfortunately this marked the start of a Lea Park collapse and only Lee Mardle (13) and Dewick (33) offered any resistance to leave Lea on a score of 220.

In reply Everton got off to an awful start thanks to Dewick and Housham, Dewick removing the opener Waghorne and Campion in the first and third overs while Housham took a wicket from a catch from Alsop.

When Dewick took another wicket Everton were reeling at 30 for 4 but, as has happened many times before, Jon Mimms stuck to the task at hand to gradually bring Everton back into the game.

Assisted by Anthony, the pair put on a 100 runs to bring Everton right back into the match, but Lea never gave up and were soon back in the driving seat when Needham and Orton took a wicket each.

Unfortunately for Lea the crucial wicket of Mimms eluded them until Housham came back on and had Mimms caught behind for a majestic 97.

The game suddenly opened up for both teams but it was Everton who proved the strongest as they saw the game home with two balls of the game to spare.

Also in Division Two Wiseton recorded a fine seven-wicket victory over Grassmoor.

Division Four

Marshalls 2nds v Kiveton Park 2nds

AFTER Marshalls' captain Brooks won the toss Kiveton were invited to bat but as early as the second over Plumtree had Gilbert clean bowled for four.

Plumtree then was struck by his hip injury so Snell replaced him and had Spivey (31) caught by Crowther at mid-off, had Buillivent (22) caught behind by Metcalfe, and then had Richardson (11) and Clark (0) dismissed in the next two overs.

Barker took the wicket of Haslam (16) with a terrific yorker, Favill had Clark (39) caught in covers by Green, and Crowther picked up the wickets of J. Gilbert (7) and White (32) to leave Kiveton on 201 for nine after their 46 overs.

Brooks and Snell opened for Marshalls but in the first over Brooks had to retire due to a calf strain.

K. Metcalfe joined Snell but the pair found the going tough against some handy seam bowling and Snell was caught for eight.

Green and Metcalfe kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely before Metcalfe was caught for 20.

Sean Metcalfe was run out for a duck but Green and Plumtree continued their recent form by sending the ball all over the ground, Green scoring 63 and Plumtree 52 - his maiden half century for the club.

Clark and Turver saw out the rest of play to leave Marshalls 16 runs shorts on 186 for 5.

Special Mention to Kevin Metcalfe who has not conceded any byes in the last four games.

Thanks to match sponsors Elite Signs and Mrs A. Hardy.

In Division Five North Wheatley with Leverton 2nds beat Bilsthorpe by seven wickets, Rose Leisure continued their good form with a seven-wicket victory over Ransome and Marles 2nds, and Misterton had a welcome return to winning ways when they beat Mansfield HM 2nds by eight wickets.
