Cowan out ahead of opener
BRIAN Little admits the loss of captain Gavin Cowan is a 'big blow' ahead of Gainsborough Trinity's opening game of the season.
Cowan will miss Trinity's first Blue Square Bet North match at Worcester City on Saturday after he suffered a suspected broken ankle.
The centre-half came off injured in the second-half of Saturday's game against Boston United and is expected to be out of action for several weeks.
Speaking after the Boston game, Little said: "It's a big blow for us, he (Cowan) is the captain and a leader."
Trinity also missed out on a place in the Lincs County Cup final as Boston won 2-1 on the Northolme.
Jamie Yates put the Pilgrims in front on 15 minutes before Lewis McMahon equalised from a second-half penalty.
But Miles Hunter broke Trinity hearts when he tapped in with a minute left.
"I'm disappointed," said Little.
"In the second half we limited them to half-chances but lost our shape a little bit."
Before the game, Little said he wanted to avoid more injuries ahead of the first game of the season.
However, with Emeka Nwadike and Josh Davies already out, the former Aston Villa boss' injury worries increased when skipper Cowan went off.
"It's been a bad week for us injury-wise," said Little.
"We lost Emeka, Josh may have a fractured shin bone and now we have lost our captain."
But Trinity chairman Peter Swann says the squad will be strengthened to curb the injury crisis and added he has faith in the team to achieve its goal of promotion.
Swann posted on the club's online message board: "We hope to announce a couple of signings, possibly more this week.
"I have full confidence in this squad to do the job when required and I am really looking forward to our first match."
