New boss Dominic Roma has included several young players amongst his new signings over the summer, including many with professional experience.

And Kane hopes that opting for youth rather than relying too heavily on experience might prove a shrewd move.

He said: “Dom has had the freedom to do with his budget as he wishes and has gone for younger, hungrier players looking to progress in the game, rather than opting for those on the way back down.

“He and his staff have scouted extensively and that has helped him pick the best players. There seems to be a real buzz about the place given who he’s brought in so it’ll be a really interesting season.”

Kane is under no illusions as to how tough a division the National League North will be this season, with an already strong roster added to by clubs such as FC Halifax Town, Salford City and Darlington, all of whom bring with them sizeable budgets.

He said: “It’s a very tough league. We can’t compete financially with some of the teams, nor with the likes of Salford having one of their high-profile owners Gary Neville ringing players directly to try and attract them, but I’m hoping we can compensate for a lot of that with the way we’re building our squad.

“Our own target is, as always, to try and get into play-off contention if we can. It’s more than achievable.

“We’ve spent a lot of money away from the playing side, including on a new pitch and on modernising many of our facilities, and we’re hoping that forward-thinking mentality will be reflected in the team.”
