Another home loss

GAINSBOROUGH Trinity's woeful home form continued as struggling Workington took all three points back to Cumbria.

Trinity were beaten by two goals from Anthony Wright.

His first half strike came from Workington's first venture into Trinity territory.

Trinity responded immediately through Luke Beckett, but Wright's free-kick seven minutes from time secured a vital three points for The Reds.

The Blues made four changes from the side hammered by Burscough.

Ian Ross and Liam Needham, making his first start this season, came into central midfield in place of Matt Austin and injured captain Danny Anson.

James Lukic captained the side on his return, while James Cullingworth came in at left-back for Martin Drury.

The hosts made a very positive start, with The Blues looking positive and busy from the start.

Ryan Mallon's diving header nearly gave Trinity the lead 10 minutes in when he met Ashley Burbeary's cross from the right, only to see his header cannon of the post.

Mallon pounced on a mistake by Kyle May, only to see his shot from point-blank range well saved by Adam Collin.

Trinity were dominating the play, but were once again guilty of being caught out at the back.

When Workington were awarded a free-kick just inside their own half there seemed little danger, but the long punt forward was allowed to travel and drop to the feet of Wright, who poked home from five yards.

However, Trinity responded immediately through Beckett, when he turned home Mallon's cross from six yards.

Mallon had collected the ball out on the right, drove into the area, and delivered a perfect cross along the six-yard box leaving Beckett with the simplest of finishes.

Workington had the ball in the net again three minutes later, when Wright's wayward shot from 25 yards was turned in by Phil Mcluckie's header, but the assistant's flag denied The Reds.

Cullingworth and Canoville were finding space down both flanks, and Cullingworth went close from 20 yards after a driving run at a static Reds defence.

The second half was a different story, as Trinity failed to pose a serious threat to Collin in the Workington goal, while Neal Spafford allowed Johny Wright to get through on Sollitt, but the Trinity stopper saved Spafford's blushes.

Trinity had a decent shout for a penalty when Lee Andrews appeared to handle in the box.

Johny Wright again got in behind Trinity but was denied by Sollitt.

Substitute Jason Bradley saw a good chance wasted after he failed to get a telling touch on Beckett's flick, while Needham had the ball in the goal, but was too denied by the eagle-eyed assistant.

Anthony Wright's free-kick from the right hand corner of the area came after Cullingworth brought down.

Questions were asked over the positioning of the wall, while Sollitt was left unsighted as Wright's low strike came through a crowed area to nestle in the bottom corner.

Manager Steve Charles was again left to lament the wasted opportunities throught the first half.

He said: "I thought that in the first half we played well, there were some good moves and good football, and we had the chances. Ryan has hit the post and I feel we had them on ropes, but like so often this season we failed to finish them off."

The Trinity boss was again critical of his goalkeeper, but also questioned his sides' organisation for the winner.

"The first goal was poor, and Adam Sollitt has to take blame, as they are too deep and to close to him," he said.

"But to his credit, he has made some good saves in the second half to keep us in it."

"The second goal is poor and unprofessional. It took them too long to get four in the wall, and then they have left a big hole."
