A mountain to climb

GAINSBOROUGH MAN Shaun Pycroft scaled the dizzy heights of the legendary Mont Ventoux while on a family holiday in France.

The mountain is the most legendary step of the Tour-de-France, bordering the Alps, and has 21K at an average gradient of 7.5 per cent.

It also has a reputation for perilous winds.

Shaun completed the climb in 1h 45 mins – with just 15 mins to get back down, and his average speed was 6.2mph.

The French trip fulfilled a lifelong dream for the avid 39-year-old cyclist, who races regularly for Eagar Cycling, and is something he hopes to beat when he turns 40 next year.

l AS part of National Bike Week Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club held a seven-and-a-half mile novice race for non-racing cyclists to experience the thrill of a cycle race.

A wind and a short shower made it a tough race for the seven cyclists who took part in the ride.

Five riders also took part in the Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club Non-Racing Members Trophy event on the same course.

The events started on Laughton Lane, Morton, and progressed through Laughton Woods, Wildsworth and East Stockwith to the finish along Carr Lane.

After the event the group met at the Crooked Billet pub for the trophies to be handed out and the club would like to thank all at the pub for their hospitality, and also thanks to Gainsborough Aegir racing members who marshalled the event and Gainsborough Trophy Centre for their assistance.
