Gainsborough Bowls League title contenders Scotter 1 and Melrose SSC both had serious scares in the latest round of matches, but both managed to avoid defeat.

Scotter 1 were at home to Beckingham who gave their hosts their biggest home fright so far.

Beckingham won two rinks and drew another, but Scotter 1 just won the aggregate 74-68 to hang onto a 5-5 draw.

Previously, Beckingham had ended a run of five defeats with a hard-fought 7-33 (63-55) home win over Owston Ferry, for whom Mervyn Storrs, Ben Sheering and Anthony O’Keefe won 31-12.

Melrose visited Marton and yet again found the task difficult.

For most of the way it seemed that either side could win and the aggregate was always close.

But at the finish, Melrose just won 6-4 (76-70).

Melrose then easily beat visitors Marshall Sports 10-0 (50 shots).

Marton GB then visited Misterton who had won four in a row prior to the game. But Marton came away winning 8-2 (77-66).

Misterton have games in hand but they will have to play better than that to climb further.

Marshall A visited Rose A looking to overtake their rivals but they will have to wait a little longer after a narrow 6-4 (76-1) defeat.

However, Marshall A do have games in hand.

Rose A then visited Owston Ferry and in another tight match came away 7-3 (59-53) winners.

Who will finish bottom is settled now with North Wheatley missing their best chance of a win at Marshall Sports.

Wheatley were never in it and lost 9-1 (87-50).
