Notts Diagonals made it two Gainsborough and Sunday League cup finals in two years, when they beat East Markham in the semi-final of the Annie Lawson Trophy.

It was a hotly contested affair for the young Retford side, with a very busy referee having to dish out cards to their opponents on six occasions.

But the clash of two very different styles in how to play the game made for a spectacle, with some exceptional goals.

Diagonals scored early with Richard Marshall slotting home at close range in the fourth minute.

Then after a period of the game ebbing and flowing between the two sides East Markham got a deserved equaliser when Steve Lingley ghosted in the near post from a corner to poke the ball home with his head.

A 30 minute stoppage occurred for a serious injury by a Diagonals player.

And when play resumed it was Diagonals who quickly took the initiative when a long throw went into the box and found Alec Mcleod unopposed, who glanced the ball home.

East Markham then scored against the run of play where the ball took a slight deflection which wrong footed the keeper Dave Harrison.

Notts Diagonals rallied well and a cross down the left from Connor Lambie found Tom Armstrong who leathered an unstoppable shot past a floundering Markham keeper.

Callum Rutherford then made sure it was Notts Diagonals day when he curled a 20-yard shot past an unsighted keeper.

Notts Diagonals will play Hallcroft in an all-Nottinghamshire final at Gainsborough’s Martin and Co Arena on Tuesday 28th April.
