Local kids do battle in a World Cup of their own

Despite England’s dismal displays, it’s been a footballing summer to remember for over 200 local kids, who enjoyed a World Cup Festival at Levellings playing field .

Twenty-eight teams from all across Lincolnshire enjoyed the Gainsborough Town Council organised festival, which saw them change from their normal club colours to compete as World Cup countries such as England, Brazil and Spain.

Gainsborough Town Council football development officer Jonathan Coles said: “Over 200 players enjoyed a day full of football in preparation for the World Cup.”

“Our main aim was to get the players excited about the tournament and that will hopefully translate into a life long love for the sport.”

The event was free of charge and supported by the Young Leaders of The Gainsborough Academy Leadership programme and Gainsborough Town Councillors who volunteered their time throughout the day.

Scotter Juniors won the Under 7s event, Misterton United the Under 8s and Under 9s and Forrest Rangers the Under 10s tournament.

Gainsborough Town Council, Gainsborough College and Gainsborough Trinity Football Club all sponsored the festival.
