With the Gainsborough and District Football League title decided many clubs have been fulfilling their fixtures in the last week with very much an end of season atmosphere.

The game with the biggest interest factor this week was on Tuesday night when Mattersey FC travelled to Rainworth Rangers in the final of the Notts Minor Cup Final.

The game turned out to be a terrific contest with the result very much in doubt until the final whistle after 120 minutes of pulsating cup football with Mattersey eventually winning 4-3.

League champions Gainsborough Town Canute finished the season with two more victories to finish the season with an unbeaten record and show why they are the champions.

A 3-0 win against Harworth Colliery was followed up with a 3-0 win against Marshalls Sports that capped a superb season for Richard Mallet and his team.

Haxey FC had two midweek wins and, despite a narrow defeat on Saturday, have finished the season a lot better than they started it.

AFC Ropery have finished runners-up to Canute and two exceptionally high scoring games this week saw them score 15 goals in two matches to take their season’s tally of goals past the 100 mark and if the sheer number of games the players have played in the last few weeks had not caught up with them they may have finished a lot closer to the champions.

Bridon AFC finished in third spot after a last day 5-3 win over a Wroot FC team that have had a very disappointing season.

With a win and a draw this week BFC Birches secured fourth spot and, like AFC Ropery, the number of games some of the players have played in the last weeks of the season certainly told on them.

All clubs in the League deserve great credit for getting the games played after what has proved to be the most difficult season weather-wise for many a year.

After a summer rest hopefully everyone can come back next season and start once again to take part in Britain’s premier sport.
