Retford United finished fourth in the NCEL Premier, with a final day 3-0 victory at Lincoln Moorlands.

Badgers’ opponents were fighting for their lives at the base of the table, but defeat condemned them to a bottom two finish..

From kick off, Bobby Johnson won the ball, his ball out to Kyle Hadley was played in for Richard Medcalf who challenged the keeper, but was penalised for a foul.

The visitors soon took the lead, on 10 minutes, Reece Thompson making space on the right wing, his ball in found Medcalf and he stroked it past the keeper to give Retford the advantage.

Only four minutes after taking the lead, the advantage was increased, another run by Thompson and a ball in found Johnson who drilled the ball low and past the keeper.

Despite the pressure they were enjoying, Retford had to be alert to stop a break away for Lincoln, Solomon Miller getting into a good position but unable to find the target.

Finally, on 69 minutes, the third goal came for Retford, a great cross field ball by Johnson to Kyle Hadley was played in for Liam Wilkin who tried to connect with the ball, but pushed into the feet of Medcalf who controlled and struck home.

Retford introduced Adam Holdsworth, an under 19 player to make his debut, and his first piece of the action led to a challenge by Billy Foster that earned a second yellow card, and subsequent red.

The final whistle signalled a good win for Retford, and relegation for the home side.

Details of Retford United’s pre-season plans will be released as soon as confirmation is received from their intended friendly opposition.
