Lea Park started the Bassetlaw and District Cricket League 2011 season in Division Two with an overwhelming defeat by Wiseton.
Wiseton won the toss and put Lea Park in to bat and they could only manage 99 in 31.2 overs and Wiseton knocked them off in 20.5 overs
Chris Needham and Elton Moulds opened the batting for Lea and Matt Loates and James Edgeley opened the bowling for Wiseton, and with the score on 16 Moulds was caught by overseas player James Moss, bowled Loates for two.
Five runs later Needham departed to an excellent catch by Moss at short mid-wicket, bowled Loates, and two runs later Simon Turner was bowled by Loates for a duck. The carnage went on as Andy Dewick was bowled by Moss for one.
With the score on 28 for four captain Matt Housham joined Ian Elliott at the crease and they put on an impressive 48 runs before Housham holed out to Moss from the bowling Tom Lane. With the score on 76 for five Lea’s last chance lay with Elliott who was 23 not out.
Next to go was Andy Orton for a duck followed by Elliott for 27. At 81 for 7 Paul Marriott came to the crease and dispatched the first two balls for four. Unfortunately Eddie Cooke (one) Dave Law (two) and Billy Remmington (one) quickly left leaving Marriott on 14 not out and the score on 99.
After an excellent early tea provided by the chairman’s wife Sue Roberts, play resumed and Wiseton’s openers Loates and Rob Wyles made light work of Lea’s bowlers.
After 12 overs with the score on 49 Wyles was caught by Elliott from the bowling by Needham for 22, while Loates was eventually out to an excellent catch on the long-off boundary by Marriott for 36 with the score on 63. Lane on 23 not out and Moss on nine not out completed the route.
Twenty points for Wiseton and none for Lea said it all!
It was mixed news for other Gainsborough area clubs on the first day of the new season.
Marshalls started their Championship campaign with a comprehensive defeat away to North Wheatley with Leverton. They posted a respectable 171 all out with Robert Power top-scoring on 58, while James Sizer (4-28) and Jamie Bovill (4-43) bowled well for Wheatley.
But then man of the match Jonathan Loates stepped in to score a magnificent 138 not out to steer Wheatley to an impressive seven-wicket victory.
In Division One Everton battled to a narrow three-wicket win over Harthill, dismissing then for 135 thanks to Tom Eldred (5-47) and Jon Shaw (3-46), and then Eldred with an unbeaten 34 and Simon Peck with 32 saw them pass the Harthill total.
In Division Four Marshalls 2nds completed a miserable day for the club by losing to Waleswood at Middlefield Lane by three wickets.
Despite 34 not out from Sean Metcalfe and 30 from Julian Clarke they could only muster 112, but their bowlers made the Waleswood batsmen work hard for their win with Clarke taking 4-34.
However, it was better news for Rose Leisure as they comfortably beat Everton 2nds by 58 runs at North Warren Road, scoring 183 for eight before dismissing the visitors for 125.
In Division Five Misterton lost by 39 runs away to East Drayton. They bowled the hosts out for 139 but could only muster 100 in reply.
North Wheatley with Leverton 2nds hung on for a draw at Notts and Arnold Amateur 3rds who made 194 for eight, and then Wheatley struggled to 144 for nine with Nick Cleaver top-scoring on 37.
