The game kicked off on a muddy pitch and both sides found it difficult to create any clear chances with neither goalkeeper having much to do. Midway through the first half Elm were dealt a blow when target man Shepherd limped off with hamstring troub
le.
This galvanised Elm and it wasn't long before they took the lead when Beale's exquisite cross was met by Nicholson who beat the Leverton keeper with ease. Elm continued to press on but 15 minutes later were caught out when a long ball over the top caused a defensive mix up leaving the Leverton striker able to lob the ball calmly over keeper Green to bring the sides level at the interval.
A Braveheart-esque team talk by Elm Manager Shaftner at half time seemed to rouse his troops and they started the second half with some excellent samba style flowing football. This resulted in them taking the lead when the birthday boy Ben Nicholson rounded off a fine move by beating the Leverton full back and drilling a rocket of a shot into the net. Nicholson's lazy look hides a tremendous burst of pace which he used to good effect when producing another 2 well taken goals to hand Elm a three goal lead.
When Atkinson needlessly scythed down a Leverton forward in the box to hand them a penalty which they duly converted it should have set up a tense finish. However, that wasn't to be when man of the match Beale banged in a fifth and Hunt bundling home a sixth to leave Elm with an impressive victory.
Full credit to midfield duo Holmes and Burgess who pulled the strings all game long.
Special thanks to the Leverton player who stepped in and refereed the game well.
