THE penultimate week of the Gainsborough and District Football League season began with just two issues to be settled: who would win the Nursing Association Cup and who would take the honours in the Division Two title race.
The Nursing Cup Final was played on the Northolme on Tuesday evening and was remarkably a re-runb of both the Presidents Cup Final and the Trinity Challenge Cup Final.
AFC Friendship, who had won the previous two finals, were once again up against H
arworth Colliery and the game, like the previous two, was a very tense, close contest.
After Friendship took an early lead it was Harworth who took the game to their opponents and deservedly equalised.
With chances at a premium it always looked like the next goal would be the winner and Friendship's captain Paul Shipley rose to the occasion to nod in a free kick to once again give his side the trophy.
Although Friendship have had to relinquish their Division One title to the excellent Sun Inn Tuxford, it is no mean feat to win all the cup competitions open to them and while a lot of sympathy goes to Harworth Colliery for three very narrow defeats, Friendship can be very proud of their achievement.
The Division Two title race has been very close for weeks now with both East Drayton and Morton Amateurs at various times looking like champions.
The race became more clear cut in midweek when East Drayton had a very convincing 5-1 home win over Epworth Town while Morton Amateurs' game against Marshalls Sports was washed out after a downpour on the Morton pitch left the ground unplayable.
This meant that East Drayton went into Saturday's game against Jack and Jill knowing that a victory would see them crowned Division Two champions.
Having to switch the game to East Markham because of cricket commitments on their own ground could have upset their form but a thoroughly professional performance saw them win 6-2 to take the title in style.
East Drayton have been unbeaten in the league since the beginning of December and no one can deny their right to be called champions.
In the event they would have been champions anyway as Morton Amateurs went down to a surprise 5-3 home defeat by Epworth Town, a result that leaves then looking over their shoulder at the fast finishing Marshalls Sports as to who finishes in the runners-up spot.
The two teams were due to meet last night (Wednesday) in a game Marshalls will have to win to give themselves any chance of overtaking Morton.
Marshalls had a convincing 4-1 win on Saturday at near neighbours Elm Cottage to give themselves the outside chance of finishing second.
Saxilby Athletic finished the season as they began it with a convincing 6-1 victory over bottom team Wheelie Old Boys.
In Division One the only questions left are as to what the positions behind Sun Inn Tuxford will be and AFC Friendship, having finished their season, will now have to wait for Harworth Colliery's last two games this week to see who will finish runners-up.
White Lion moved into fourth spot after an exciting 5-3 last game win at Ye Olde Sun but will have to wait for Harworth Colliery Colts' and Rampton Hospital's results this week to see who finished where.
AFC Friendship signed off with a comfortable 3-0 win at Harworth Colts to move the pressure on to Harworth Colliery in the race for the runners-up spot.
