THE first in-house championships for Trenton Dolphins Swimming Club were held at the West Lindsey Leisure Centre last Saturday.
The large entry for all the age groups ensured there would be some highly competitive action and many new times and personal bests were on the cards.
The four Dolphins who have recently swam so brilliantly at the Midlands age groups in Coventry we
re entered in their respective age groups, Megan Stevenson, Robyn Dand, David Trickett and Aaron Smith all hoping to repeat that success.
The record book for the Dolphins shows that records set as far back as 1982 are still holding despite the new equipment and training methods available to the swimmers of 2009.
However, six new entries went into the book by the end of the evening.
Eleven-year-old Aaron Smith was in sparkling form.
He beat the old 50m freestyle backstroke mark from 2002 by well over a second and then took 11 seconds off the 200m freestyle which had also been set in 2002.
Robyn Dand was unstoppable as she won the ladies 50m freestyle with an outstanding effort taking half a second off the previous 2003 time.
However, her 100m backstroke was equally outstanding with a three-second personal best and seven seconds off the record set in 2007.
One of the many exciting finishes was in the boys 14 years 100m breaststroke.
James Smith and David Trickett were having a titanic battle down each of the first three lengths.
The fourth length was stroke for stroke before James turned on the power some 10 metres from the finish and he beat the old record from 1998 by one-and-a-half seconds.
David was so close to James at the finish that he, too, beat the old record.
The Dolphins are now looking forward to the next championships which will be held in early July.
