IT was quarter-final day in both the Gainsborough and District Football League Division One Presidents Cup and the second division's Annie Lawson Cup on Saturday.
The tie of the round in the Presidents Cup always looked to be the clash at Harworth between Harworth Colliery and White Lion from Retford, and the game lived up to its billing with both teams showing great fight and no little skill.
The result was in the balance right up to the final whistle and it was a goal in the final minute of the game by White Lion that gave them a semi-final spot after a thrilling 3-2 win.
Last season's cup winners AFC Friendship played host to Retford Town Reserves and they booked their place in the semis after a fairly straightforward 4-1 victory.
The all-Gainsborough tie between Morton Amateurs and Smiffys FC went very much the way of the form book with Smiffys comfortably winning 7-1.
Rampton Hospital and East Drayton had a very close game which again had the result in doubt up to the final whistle before Rampton just edged the tie 3-2.
In the Annie Lawson Cup current Division Two leaders Saxilby Athletic played host to Harworth Colliery Juniors and this game went right down to the wire before Harworth surprised their hosts to win 3-2.
Mattersey, who have lost only one game all season, proved to be just that bit stronger than visitors Epworth, winning the tie 5-2 and showing why they are the team everyone will probably have to beat if they want success at this level.
Ropery Inn very much have ambitions to win silverware this season and after a very entertaining game at home to Sun Inn Wheatley they booked their place in the semis after a 4-2 win.
Wroot sadly had only nine players available for their tie away to Bridon AFC and although the nine gave a very spirited performance their task was always going to be almost impossible, Bridon winning 8-3.
Results for Saturday 8th November: Presidents Cup – Morton Amateurs 1, Smiffys FC 7; AFC friendship 4, Retford Town Res 1; Harworth Coll 2, White Lion 3; Rampton Hospital 3, East Drayton 2. Annie Lawson Cup – Mattersey FC 5, Epworth Town 2; Ropery Inn 4, Sun Inn Wheatley 2; Bridon AFC 8, Wroot FC 3; Saxilby Ath 2, Harworth Coll Jnrs 3.
Fixtures for Saturday 22nd November (kick-off 2.15pm): Division One – Retford Town Res v Morton Ams; Smiffys FC v East Drayton; Rampton Hospital v AFC friendship; White Lion v Harworth Coll. Division Two – Bridon AFC v Wroot FC; Harworth Coll Jnrs v Saxilby Ath; Epworth Town v Mattersey FC.
