Events should be held in town
This, the same Gainsborough whose character and traditions are been slowly eaten away by self-interested busy body zealots of the mecca to consumerism that is Marshall’s Yard PLC (MY PLC). Don’t get me wrong I sometimes enjoy an over-priced cuppa as I watch my kids frolicking in the water fountains on summer’s day, but I also wonder why I am not sat in the town centre doing that exact same thing. I simply cannot stomach the way in which this car park with a few shops around it is being allowed to position itself as the most important thing to happen to Gainsborough since, well, forever. Surely there exists a contra viewpoint somewhere within the inscrutable halls of the WLDC offices? A dissenting voice that questions the legitimacy of the Marshall’s Yard PLC claim that it is now the de facto focal point of the town. Of course, the lamentable fact that the town council don’t seem to be able to organise a proverbial knees-up in a brewery leaves the field clear for MY PLC to push on with its self-serving plans, but this is to the massive detriment to the traditional heart of the town, which sees dwindling footfall and businesses going to the wall on a weekly basis. It’s also a fact that all potential high street brands coming to Gainsborough are being sold MY by default.
For me the solution is clear. Someone with some authority who gives one should issue an edict which states that all events are to be held in the traditional heart of the town. If the event organisers will not subscribe then the event does not happen. Take a hard line and drive events to the town centre and you will see a turnaround in the fortunes of the businesses there – don’t worry, the cuckoo that is MY PLC will continue to exist but it will become what it is supposed to be; merely another place to buy stuff.
