Police and Notts County Council’s Trading Standards team swooped on Bing Bong, located on Gateford Road, on Friday 25th April, removing packs of powder labelled with brands such as ‘Charly Sheen’ and ‘Go Gaine’.

The council said it was carrying out tests to identify the chemicals that the packs contain, although a spokesman would not confirm which shop had been raided.

Coun Glynn Gilfoyle said: “So called ‘legal highs’ contain a cocktail of chemicals which have often never been used in drugs for human consumption so have not been tested that they are safe.”

“There are national reports on the potential impact of such substances have on people, including addiction, anti-social behaviour, violence, burglary and even death.”

“Many local people were concerned about the sale of such substances at this Bassetlaw shop so we responded swiftly with our recent raid.”

Bing Bong, which opened around two weeks ago, came under fire when residents became aware of a sign outside the shop clearly advertising ‘poppers, powders, pills’ and other legal highs.

But the owner, who does not wish to be identified, has hit back at calls from residents for his business to be shut down. He told the Guardian: “We are a legitimate business and wish only to comply with the law and the police.”

“The products clearly state that they are not for human consumption, and we do not sell them for any other purposes than herbal incense and research chemicals. What any individual chooses to do with these are not within my control- however, we do operate a strict under 18s policy. The substances that were taken by Trading Standards are merely being tested as part of a routine procedure.”
