North Notts College students have been busy creating a number of pieces of artwork which could end up adorning the glazing at Worksop’s new £3.2m bus station.

The 16 and 17 year-olds have submitted several designs which could be etched on to the windows and doors of the new station which is currently being built.

The work has been integrated to form one of their assignments, with Notts County Council providing a ‘real world’ brief for the students to follow.

Mike Barnett, of the council’s major projects team, said: “Our architect Robert Parry and project manager Paul Horn visited the college on several occasions to talk through the designs with the students.”

“We’ve been very impressed by the high standard and are now considering placing some of the designs on internal walls at the bus station in addition to having it on the windows.”

The students are now in the process of finalising their designs and recently visited the construction site to see work in progress on the new bus station.

Work began on site last autumn and the bus station - at the junction of Newcastle Street and Watson Road - is due to open this summer.

The council has been working closely with bus operator Stagecoach and Bassetlaw District Council on the planning for the station.

Once built, the running costs will be shared between the County Council and Bassetlaw District Council.

The new station uses design elements used successfully at other recently-opened county council bus stations such as those at Retford, Newark and Mansfield and will feature a staffed information point, toilets, seating, electronic information screens and CCTV.

Eight bus bays will be provided to cater not only for existing demand in the town but also allow for future growth of services. On a tour of the new bus station site earlier this year, Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of transport and highways at the council, said: “I think it is absolutely brilliant. For Worksop this is a fantastic building that is under construction now.”
