The Guardian is leading a campaign to help prevent the Worksop branch of the Legion from being closed down.

And the community as a whole getting out to support the Legion’s events this year will go a long way towards ensuring the Worksop branch remains open and active.

On 4th August, there will be a special event in Worksop Market Place to commemorate the date Britain entered the First World War.

“It will start at 9.30pm finishing at 11pm when all present will extinguish a candle signifying the start of Britain’s entry into the war,” said Elaine Hopkins, regional fund-raiser for the Legion.

“We particularly would like to make contact with any Worksop resident that had descendants in WWI and also to encourage any medal holders to wear their medals on this occasion.”

Organisers also hope to have a children’s choir made up of youngsters from all schools across the area singing at the event, as well as readings of poetry from the famous war poets of the conflict, such as Wilfred Owen, as well as a short service with prayers, and a bugler playing The Last Post.

All members of the Worksop and surrounding community are encouraged to be part of the event.

Following on from this event, there will be a Festival of Remembrance and launch of the 2014 Poppy Appeal at North Notts Arena on 25th October, details of which will be confirmed shortly.
