Worksop: Bassetlaw councillor says incinerator plans would be devastating for the town

Coun Pressley spoke against the proposal for an incinerator at the old recycling centre on Shireoaks Road

The proposed incinerator would not be incinerating local domestic (green) bin waste from Bassetlaw as this will be going to Sheffield for incineration.

Instead it would be incinerating waste from much further afield from outside of the area.

Coun Pressley said: “If built, such a very large waste incinerator would be very detrimental to Worksop’s image and be devastating for the town and surrounding area for many years to come.”

“If a subsequent planning application was submitted to Notts County Council, then Bassetlaw Council would be a consultee.”

To enable public debate, Coun Pressley felt that the response from Bassetlaw Council should be decided by the full planning committee.

This would then allow speakers from the campaign Group, plus representatives of Rhodesia and Shireoaks Parish Councils to register their objection along with the local district councillor.

Matters discussed mainly centred around concerns of the risks to human health from emissions.

Other matters raised included the need for more public awareness.

Apart from press reports, it was felt, as endorsed by John Mann MP, that the campaign group needed to get as many people possible to sign their Worksop Against Incineration petition.

The campaign group’s next meeting is at The Grafton Hotel on Gateford Road in Worksop on Thursday, 21st August at 7.30pm.
