Councillors in Rotherham say failings that allowed the sexual exploitation of at least 1,400 youngsters to carry on for more than a decade were “unacceptable and inexcusable”.

During the meeting a number of Rotherham councillors admitted to attending a seminar in 2005 in which members were told that such abuse was taking place in the town - promting angry reponses from the public gallery. Following the meeting, many opposition councillors were left dissatisfied with the cabinet’s response and called for more robust action.
