Tributes have been paid to a ‘caring’ Worksop vicar and ‘devoted’ family man.

Reverend John Ogley, 71, passed away at Bassetlaw Hospital in January after a short illness.

Born in Barnsley, Rev Ogley went to Darfield and Barnsley School, before getting a job in the local library service.

The son of a coal miner, he was the first to go into ministry, although his family were actively involved in the church as lay people.

He went on to study at both Durham Theological College, and Oak Hill Theological College in London.

Following his training he was ordained as a deacon in 1965 and priest in 1966.

He served as curate at Ardsley and Carlton in the Willows, before becoming priest in charge at Tollerton and vicar at Skegby.

He was rector at Carlton from 1993 to 2001, and in his later years was priest in charge Langold and Oldcotes.

After his retirement Rev Ogley was part time chaplain at Bassetlaw Hospital and continued to officiate in the Southwell and Nottingham Diocese as well as being chair of governors for both Tollerton Village Primary School and St Andrews Primary School in Skegby.

“John had always had an interest in hospital chaplaincy because he was really suited to being a parish priest,” said his wife Pat.

“He was very interested in the caring side of ministry.”

“People would often ask for him to do services after they had seen the way he had done someone elses. He was very well known for his caring nature.”

A dedicated family man, Rev Ogley leaves behind wife Pat, daughters Rachel and Helen and granddaughters Lauren and Jessica.

“He was totally devoted to his family,” continued Pat.

“He also had a love for choral church music, and we were both members of the University of the Third Age.”

Outside of his work Rev Ogley was a keen gardener, and also enjoyed keeping active with walking and swimming.

A member of the National Trust, he enjoyed visiting places of historical interest and natural beauty as well as travelling and caravanning holidays.

Rev Ogley’s funeral took place on 25th January at St Anne’s Church in Worksop.
