A CARING and popular catering assistant from Whites Wood Lane Community Junior School in Gainsborough has been nominated for The Standard’s Teacher’s Rose by her number one fans – the schoolchildren.

Mrs Karen Doran has worked at Whites Wood Lane for four years and even went there as a child herself.

The Standard went along to the school to take Mrs Doran by surprise and present her with her well-deserved award.

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked!” she said. “I was not expecting this at all.”

“It’s just an absolute pleasure to work here. The best part of the job is the children because they always give you a smile and if you’re ever feeling down then they’re the ones who’ll pick you up.”

She continued: “The staff in the kitchen and around the school all work to make this a really happy place to be.”

“The children here are like my children, and they’re all lovely. It’s so nice to watch them grow up and see the difference from when they first come in.”

Mrs Doran added: “It’s amazing to see them come in as little tots and leave as little ladies and gentlemen.”

The dinner lady said that she was extremely grateful to all who had nominated her.

“I’d like to say thank you very much, it’s been an absolute pleasure,” she said. “They have made me feel really special.”

Headteacher Mrs S Close said that Mrs Doran was more than deserving of her Teacher’s Rose.

“I think this just shows how much the children really appreciate her and how she serves them and talks to them,” she said.

“She’s a really important part of the school, and this really reflects what a wonderful relationship she has with the children.”

She added: “She always does that little bit extra and she’s just a lovely person to have on board.”

Mrs Doran was nominated by pupil Daisy Anderson and her mother Laura.

“My daughter Daisy and her friends Beth, Jessica, Xander El, Kacey and Heidi have nominated Mrs Doran because she makes the best school dinners and when Daisy is poorly, Karen always makes her smile and look after her.”

She added: “Karen is leaving in July and all the kids are really upset and will miss her so much.”
