The population of the East Midlands on census day, 27 March 2011, was 4.5 million – an increase of eight per cent from 2001.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published the first results from the 2011 Census this week. Outside London, the East Midlands was one of three English regions to have grown by eight per cent.
