New campaign to encourage people to protect themselves against financial fraud

Lincolnshire Trading Standards is backing the new '˜Take Five' campaign encouraging consumers to protect themselves from financial fraud.

The campaign, run by Financial Fraud Action (FFA), was designed after it was revealed that, in the UK, a financial scam was committed once every 15 seconds.

According to the group, more than one million cases of card, cheque, phone or online fraud were recorded from January to June 2016, which was a 53 per cent rise on the same period in 2015.

The Take Five campaign is asking consumers to help protect themselves from financial fraud by remembering some simple advice. Never disclose security details, such as your PIN or full password, don’t assume an email request or caller is genuine, don’t be rushed, listen to your instincts and stay in control.

Ian Newell, business and public protection manager at Lincolnshire Trading Standards, said: “Many people already know the dos and don’ts when it comes to sharing personal details, but it is easy to forget when you are flustered, feel pressurised or are rushed into sharing information. Take Five is about knowing it is okay to stop a conversation, taking time to think about an email or not sharing your personal information if you don’t want to. Although we, together with Lincolnshire Police other government agencies, continue to work hard trying to catch those responsible for the frauds and cons and to support victims, we would recommend that everyone should be vigilant and safeguard their information, so, if you get any calls, texts or emails out of the blue asking for your personal or financial details always take a moment to stop and think.”
