Morrisons worker defrauded £4K + in Mansfield

Patricia Burns, who worked at the Sutton Road store for ten years, took £4,568, between January 2016 and February 2017.

The alarm was raised when £107 was refunded to the same two cards on the same day, and a probe was launched.

She told police she was in financial difficulties because she had been helping her son, said Kate Beardmore, prosecuting.

Simon Greaves, mitigating, said Burns made “full and frank admissions”, and described herself as “disgusted with her actions.”

She has since resigned, the court heard. She is also the carer for two elderly parents.

Burns, 53, of Laurel Avenue, Church Warsop, admitted fraud by abuse of position when she appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Greta Percival, of the probation service, said: “She said to me she was disgusted by what she had done, and the shock she had put her family through.

“Her son had no knowledge of what was going on.”

District judge Andrew Meachin said: “Sadly, by your own actions you have made life very difficult for yourself.

“I have had to consider whether to impose a custodial sentence.”

He gave her a 12 month community order, with 200 hours of unpaid work, and ordered her to repay what she stole. No costs were awarded.
