A new cafe is coming to Marshall’s Yard this spring and the couple behind the venture asked some of the region’s talented young designers to develop a brand identity for their store.

Mette and Michael Robinson, who own and manage the Cream café at Marshall’s Yard, are now branching out with a new venture called Root.

Graphic design students at Doncaster College were asked to design the signage for Root and Jonathan Brown, 16, was chosen.

Michael Robinson, who is a former Doncaster College Design student, said: “We are really looking forward to launching Root at Marshall’s Yard.

“When we started looking at this as a concept we thought it would be a great experience for the College students to work on a live project with a client in a real business environment.

“We have been really impressed with the standard of work and Jonathan’s design is fantastic, it’s going to work great as Root’s new identity.”

Jonathan was given Apple vouchers for his design work on the Root logo.

He said: “When given the brief I was keen to combine the idea of healthy food with “food on the go”.

“I was only three weeks in to my course when the project was presented to us to design a logo for the new Root business.

“It’s given me some really good experience as I now know what it takes to meet a brief and what questions you have to ask.

“It has helped me make the decision that I want to pursue a career in graphic design, plus I can now say by the age of 16 I’d produced a logo for a real company.”

Alison Hall, centre manager for Marshall’s Yard, said: “Root is going to bring something completely different and new to the centre and we can’t wait to see the completed store – and of course the fantastic menu.

“Well done to all the students and particularly Jonathan who has done a brilliant job of creating a fantastic identity for the new Root business.”

Mette, who was born and grew up in Denmark, has taken inspiration from her Nordic roots and will be bringing her home country’s food influences to the new Root store with delicious rye bread sandwiches as well as a fantastic range of broths, salads and snacks.

Mette said: “We have been looking for the right location to bring our new concept in healthy and nutritious foods to the market and this is perfect for us.

“We are really excited about this new venture and passionate about offering delicious, healthy and honest food.”

Since opening Cream in 2008 the couple have built up a reputation for fresh and delicious home cooking and will run Root alongside their existing business.
