A fiction writer from Knaith has been named as the winner of the 2013 Rubery International Short Story Award.

Gill Blow won the award for her story On the Bench, which has been published in an anthology along with the other short-listed writers.

A published writer whose work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4, Gill has been writing for more than seven years since completing a Masters degree in Writing at Sheffield Hallam University.

“I was really thrilled to hear that I’d won the award,” said Gill.

“It is always amazing to find out you have won something, it doesn’t happen often and when it does it gives your confidence a big boost.”

Gill is also keen to promote short stories which she believes don’t enjoy the popularity they deserve.

“Unlike a novel a short story has to have an immediate impact, and in very few but significant words, show the reader a character, a place, and the reason for the story, what’s happening, or what isn’t,” said Gill.

“A writer I admire a great deal, William Trevor, compares writing short stories to a piece of sculpture chipping away again and again, discarding the words you don’t need until you reach the essence of what you are trying to create.”

“I have adapted seven of my short stories for the amateur stage specifically to bring them to another audience, and widen their appeal.”

To promote short stories Gill and a group of actors have formed amateur theatre company The Workhouse Players.

And seven of her stories, which have been adapted for the stage, are being performed in TAKE 7 at the Sheffield Library Theatre on 24th and 25th January at 7.30pm.

For further information and to book, email workhouseplayers@outlook.com or call 07790736410.

The Anthology of short stories entitled On The Bench is available to buy now from Amazon.
