Free school meals for all Key Stage One pupils across North Lincolnshire begin in September.

Universal free school dinners for infants will mean a 40 per cent increase in those meal numbers for the council.

A number of school kitchens have been refurbished to meet the new demand.

North Lincolnshire Council’s School Catering Team formerly provided around 5,100 school meals to 62 primary schools every day. It recently achieved the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for serving fresh and healthy meals, using local and farm assured produce where possible.

The price of a school meal remains the same at £2.10 a day.

Coun Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhoods, said: “We are delighted that we’ve achieved the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark in recognition of our commitment to serving freshly prepared, seasonal meals that offer our pupils a great healthy meal every day, cooked by our great school cooks who care about the children and what they eat.
