Two best friends who found out they had breast cancer have raised thousands of pounds for the Bassetlaw Breast Care Unit.

Cath Beckett and Sian Bell, have raised more than £3,500 and they will donate the money to help buy specialist equipment at the hospital.

Sian said: “Three months after my husband finished his treatment for throat cancer, Cath told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.”

“I was stunned. I just could not believe it. First my husband, then my best friend.”

“However Cath is a very positive person and this helped her get through her surgery and chemotherapy. When she was coming to the end of her treatment, I found a lump and was told I had breast cancer too.”

The pair are now feeling fit and healthy after making a full recovery.

Cath said: “Sian had an operation with the same surgeon, Mr Kolar, and his team at Bassetlaw hospital and started her chemotherapy one week after I finished my last one. She then went on to have radiotherapy.”

“We wanted to say thank you to the team at Bassetlaw and help them raise money for a much needed fat transfer machine, which they want to buy. The machine costs £24,000 and means that women undergoing reconstructive surgery following a masectomy, need only a minor operation and achieve a much improved result.”

“We organised a race night with a pie and peas supper in our village hall, got sponsors for races from local businesses and for horses from friends and family.”

“The night was a huge success and everyone enjoyed it. We were amazed when we realised how much money we had made and are grateful to everybody who supported us.”
