UPDATE - Waste spillage closes M1
Traffic and Travel
MOTORISTS are being warned to expect long delays after the M1 was closed in both directions this morning (Wednesday 24th October)
The M1 in South Yorkshire is currently closed with stationary traffic in both directions between Junction 32, M18 (Thurcroft) and Junction 33, A630 (Catcliffe), because of a spillage of chemicals on the road.
There is a diversion in operation with northbound traffic advised to use the M18 and A1(M).
There is heavy congestion on northbound to Junction 31, A57 (Sheffield) and on Southbound to Junction 34, A631 (Meadowhall).
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say that the initial call came just after 10.30am, with police and firefighters arriving to find a lorry located between Junction 32 and 33 northbound, before the entry slip road from the M18.
Four fire appliances and two support units with around 25 firefighters are in attendance.
The spokesman said: “Emergency services’ first priority was to identify the type of waste materials involved and assess the risk to the public.”
“A small number of people who have come into direct contact with the waste are being washed with water but there is not believed to be any risk to any other member of the public. A 100metre safety cordon is in place as a precaution but drivers who believe they may have driven past the incident, through the waste, are not believed to require any treatment whatsoever.”
The road is currently closed to allow the waste to be completely cleared from the area, and ongoing assessments are being made as to when it can be reopened.
