Road traffic accident occured along the B6042 Creswell Road (w120925-1)

The deaths of two young sisters who were killed in a road smash have left villagers in Creswell in shock.

The girls, five-year-old Chantelle Keywood and her 22-month-old sister Yleina, died in the collision between a Peugeot 106 and a Citroen C2 on the B6042 Crags Road.

Their 29-year-old mother, who was driving the Peugeot, and seven-year-old sister were both taken to hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

Police say the family come from the Worksop area and are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

The road was closed for several hours after police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene near Creswell Crags, about a mile from the village.

Coun Duncan McGregor, Elmton-with-Creswell Parish Council chairman, said: “The village is absolutely shocked.”

“It is horrendous at any crash, to have any fatalities, but when there are young people involved it makes it all the more tragic. This is obviously a young family, God knows how they would get over this.”

“And the young lady who was driving the other car, how she must feel you cannot imagine.”

“Your heart goes out to the family.”

Residents reported hearing sirens when the accident happened, on Monday, at about 4.45pm.

The Peugeot was being driven towards the A60 and the Citroen towards Creswell when the collision happened.

Fire crews from Shirebrook and Bolsover attended to make the vehicles safe.

A 23-year-old woman who was driving the Citroen, from Worksop, sustained an arm injury.

Katie Adamski, headteacher at Creswell Junior School, said: “I think it has been quite a shock for the village.

“We heard all the sirens as a few members of staff live here, then we heard there had been a fatal collision.

“Creswell is community minded when anything like this happens.

“Our thoughts go out to the family.”

Online tributes have also been paid to the youngsters.

Rebecca Fisher wrote on Facebook: “My son Alex was in the same class as Chantelle. He and the rest of the school are heartbroken. Such a sad loss. My thoughts are with the family.”

Witnesses to the collision are asked to call 01773 572929.
