Patricia Higginbotham and grand-daughter Kate before the flight

You’re never too old... - that’s the message from one Retford resident who has proved age is no barrier when it comes to embarking on an unforgettable experience.

Patricia Higginbotham recently took to the sky at Retford Gamston Airport with a flying lesson to celebrate her 86th birthday, proof that later life can be rich and hugely fulfilling.

Pat said: “I’d been in the air force in the 1940’s as a ground mechanic and ever since then flying had always been close to my heart, so my son and daughter-in-law decided to surprise me with a flight for my birthday.” “Taking off from Retford Gamston, we covered a lot of ground, flying over RAF Waddington, Southwell and the surrounding areas.

“Harry, the pilot, let me take over the controls for about 10-15 minutes. It was a fantastic experience – especially as my grand-daughter got to come along for the ride.”

Pat, who moved to the Charter Court development on North Road in August 2011, is enjoying life at the development and is making the most of her extra free time.

“I am very happy here – it’s nice to be in a friendly environment with like minded people.”

“Since moving to Charter Court, I’ve found I have a lot more spare time for leisure activities like bowls and even flying! I think it’s important for people to try new activities, age shouldn’t be a barrier,” she said.

For information about Charter Court, visit the development open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am to 5.00pm, or contact 01777 707 625. Alternatively, log onto www.mccarthyandstone.co.uk.
