Unlicensed Creswell waste carrier prosecuted

A CRESWELL man has been find £150 for transporting waste without the correct licence.
James Nyland, of Titchfield Street, Creswell, appeared at Worksop Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Bassetlaw Council’s environmental health team has been working with Notts Police on stop and search operations throughout the district.
Nyland was not registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier and consequently was the first to be prosecuted by environmental health for this offence.
Nyland was fined £150 for transporting waste without the benefit of a waste carriers licence when he was stopped on 31st May 2012. He was also ordered to pay costs of £100 to the council.
The maximum fine for the offence relating to not having a waste carriers’ licence is £5,000. Nyland did acquire a waste carriers licence within 30 days of being stopped and magistrates took this into consideration.

“Carrying waste illegally is an environmental crime that neither the council nor the community wish to tolerate.”
“We will not hesitate to prosecute people who cannot prove that they are legitimately transporting their waste.”
“These measures will help to prevent fly-tipping, which is harmful to the environment, spoils our countryside and is expensive to clean up, which has to be paid for out of our taxes.”
