Time capsule burial part of celebrations

A time capsule was buried in the grounds of Rampton Hospital on Monday this week as part of the hospital’s centenary celebrations.

Patients, carers and hospital staff have been involved in collating memorabilia and documents that portray hospital life today to bury within the capsule - to be opened 100 years from now, in 2112.

Items include photos of the Hospital buildings, documents, DVDs of documentaries about the Hospital, service information and patient narratives.

The Trust’s chief executive Professor Mike Cooke CBE, chair Professor Dean Fathers, executive director of forensic services Dr Mike Harris and one of the hospital’s longest serving members of staff Mrs Jan Wilkinson joined hospital staff, past and present, to mark the burying of the time capsule outside the Mike Harris Centre Learning and Development Centre.

They also unveiled a commemorative plaque to symbolically mark the capsule for others to see in years to come.

Dr Mike Harris said this year is an important milestone for the Trust and the hospital and that they are proud to celebrate 100 years of improving patient care.

“The time capsule event will be an opportunity for us to consider the changes that have taken place over the past century whilst preserving a part of Hospital life in 2012,” he said.

“ I am sure that the capsule and its contents will prove to be an interesting find to whoever unearths it in the future.”

An additional time capsule will be buried within the secure area of the Hospital on Saturday 6th October, witnessed by staff and carers.

The time capsule event is just one of a variety of exciting events the Trust has planned throughout 2012 to commemorate 100 years of improving patient care.
