CHILDREN at Thurcroft Junior Academy had a nice surprise when they went back to school after the summer holidays.
Not only were they wearing a new uniform because their school had become an academy, but some of their classrooms had also been refurbished.
They were greeted by bright new learning spaces where they can knuckle down to work and their timetables now have greater emphasis on maths, English and PE. Children can also enjoy several extra curricular activities and a daily breakfast club.
The changes have come about because the school is now under the sponsorship of Aston Community Education Trust (ACET). Staff at Thurcroft will be working closely with Aston Academy, who are also sponsored by ACET, to benefit from input by their specialist teachers.
Last week Dorothy Smith, Rotherham Council’s director of schools and life long learning, visited the school to meet with staff and pupils. She was accompanied on her trip by chair of governors, Jean Long, associate principal Rebecca Scutt and executive principal Eunice Newton.
During her visit Ms Smith spent time with pupils reading and watched as they took part in an outdoor sports lesson.
Ms Smith said: “I really enjoyed my visit to Thurcroft Junior Academy.”
“It was very clear that the children were already benefiting from the strong partnership with Aston Academy particularly through the area of PE and sport.”
“The children were extremely enthusiastic and highly motivated by the positive developments taking place at the school and I wish them all a very successful school year.”
Ms Long felt everyone at the school has responded well to the changes. She said: “This is a very exciting time for Aston and Thurcroft academies as they work together to create a new history for the pupils of Thurcroft Junior Academy.”
“The parents and pupils have responded extremely well to the changes that have already taken place and I look forward to working with everyone as we embark on a new beginning together.”
