DINNINGTON youngsters collected six black bags bursting full of rubbish during a big community clean up.
Pupils from Dinnington Community Primary were just one of many groups who took part in the action day last week.
The youngsters, who were part of the school’s eco warriors group, donned high visibility jackets and armed themselves with litter pickets to collect rubbish from around the Lordens Hill area.
A giant walk-in skip was placed on a car park for local residents to get rid of any unwanted items, in a bid to encourage people to keep the area tidy.
Steve Lavin, community involvement officer for Rother Valley South Area Assembly, said people of all ages were involved in the day.
He added: “We had lots of agencies and organisations taking part, including the local junior school.”
“Some of the children came out and did a litter pick from the car park at Lordens Hill back to the school. They collected about five to six bags full of rubbish.”
“The kids, teachers, parents and other members of the community were all taking part.”
The agencies and organisations who took part in the action day were the Rother Valley South Area Assembly, police, Rotherham Council wardens, Streetpride, Community Protection, housing champions, councillors including some from Dinnington Town Council, the youth service, Salvation Army and local shop keepers.
Steve added: “It was a collaboration of various agencies and organisations working together to try and improve the area.”
“The police were doing community engagement work while the housing champions were going around estates and looking at what work needed doing.”
“Rather than doing the work piecemeal we decided to do it altogether.”
