Tesco to start building ‘in the coming weeks’

BUILDERS could descend ‘within weeks’ to start work on Worksop’s long awaited new Tesco supermarket.
Frustrations had been aired by residents that the former Clinton Maltings site, on the corner of Blyth Road and Carlton Road, had stood deserted for months.
But the supermarket giant has this week denied the latest rumours that main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland had pulled out.
“We are looking forward to starting the construction of our Worksop superstore over the coming weeks,” said a Tesco spokesman.
“We are currently liaising closely with the local and county councils on rights of way and remain optimistic that the construction will start within weeks.”
“We have appointed Bowmer & Kirkland as our contractor for the scheme. They will be responsible for building the store and have completed the initial works on the site.”
“We are really looking forward to opening our Worksop store.”
Tesco say they hope to have the store ready by the end of 2013, a plan which may sound ambitious the longer the site remains deserted.
The latest hold-up, as the Guardian reported last month, is an issue over footpaths which cross the site.
Tesco denied that an injunction was preventing further work on the store, but said it was in the process of getting permission to divert public rights of way.
A Tesco spokesman said: “We are in the process of securing a footpath diversion order, which is not unusual in schemes of this nature and is simply a procedural step to be resolved with the council before we will undertake any further works on site.”
“We are in a positive dialogue with the council and other stakeholders in relation to this order.”
Eddie Brennan from Notts County Council’s Rights of Way team added: “Bassetlaw District Council has consulted with us regarding a number of paths which previously crossed the site of the new Tesco store.”
“We are currently liaising with Bassetlaw District Council and Tesco about the best way to accommodate public paths within the new development.”
Bassetlaw council said it was still in the process of considering Tesco’s planning application for a footpath diversion order.
When plans were first announced, Tesco had said it hoped to have the new store up and running by Christmas 2012.
Once built, the new supermarket site will include a 8,121 sq m store, plus a service yard, a car park and a recycling centre. It will replace the existing Tesco supermarket on Gateford Road in Worksop.
