Team tackling workplace discrimination

A SUCCESSFUL support session was held in Worksop for members of the Bassetlaw lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

More than 40 people attended the event at Worksop Town Hall, organised by the Bassetlaw Local Government UNISON branch.

“The purpose of the meeting was to inform, support and enthuse members of the community on LGBT matters,” said Alex Porter, who organised the meeting and convenes the East Midlands LGBT group.

Alex said the event focused on the harassment and discrimination that can be experiences by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers, and highlighted the importance of a support networks.

“We’ve had lots of really positive feedback from those attending and a lot of interest from councillors and Bassetlaw Council in seeing the development of a support network for the LGBT community,” said Alex.

“They can face harassment and discrimination which is only compacted by the feeling of isolation due to the rurality of our district.”

Alex said a local support network would enable the needs of the Bassetlaw LGBT community to be met without having to seek help in nearby cities like Sheffield, Doncaster or Nottingham.

Speakers from UNISON and Stonewall - the lesbian, gay, and bisexual charity - gave inspiring talks reflecting the history of LGBT rights in the UK and changes both socially and in the workplace.
