Students shine at awards night

The Elizabethan Academy witnessed a moment of history on Thursday as the Olympic relay baton was passed to the first winner of the London 2012 Games Maker Award.
Lindsey Jones, governor at the academy, was one of the 70,000 volunteers who spent their summer working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In return for her efforts, she was presented with a relay baton intended to inspire future generations of young people.
Eddie Thorpe from Retford was presented with the award in recognition of his achievements on the badminton court. Having won the Notts Under-17 Open last year, aged just 13, Eddie was one of only six boys from the whole country to be invited to the England training camp.
The 14-year-old said: “I was shocked when they read my name out. It is such a big honour.”
Eddie will pass the baton to next year’s winner, inspiring future generations of students and providing a lasting reminder of the success of the summer games.
Another big winner on the night was Peter Cowburn from Worksop, who received the Bob Hopley Award for Unique and Distinctive Achievement.
Peter, who has stayed on to take five A-Levels at Retford Post-16, left Year 11 with 13 and a half A* Grades at GCSE, making him the highest achieving student in Bassetlaw this year.
Peter said: “It was a great success for me because I’ve worked really hard and am very proud of my achievements, particularly the Bob Hopley Award. I’m enjoying Post 16 already and am looking forward to completing my A-levels here.”
In total, nearly 200 awards were presented to students from Year seven through to 13.
