St George's Day fun for Gainsborough youngsters

HUNDREDS of scouts and guides had fun in the sun on their annual St George's Day parade through Gainsborough on Sunday.

Proud family and friends watched smartly uniformed youngsters march from the old Guildhall car park and assemble in front of All Saints Church at 3pm.

A total of 14 different scout and guide groups took part in the parade, each carrying its own colourful flag.

All Saints Church held a traditional service, providing the youngsters a chance to reaffirm their promise to the movement in a place of worship.

Following the service the parade marched back towards the old Guildhall.

Gainsborough Town and District Councillors joined them in a salute outside Gainsborough Library to complete the ceremony.

Scouts District Commissioner Robert Fall said: "The weather this year was perfect, as the sun shone and the sky was blue, which made a lovely change from the usual, cold, wet and windy parades of previous years."

"This is an important part of the scouting and guiding year and allows the flags of all the groups to be displayed and paraded through the town."

The scout movement traditionally marks St George's Day with a parade on the closest Sunday to 23rd April.

Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell chose St George as the scouts' patron saint because he embodied good scouting qualities such as faith, truthfulness and dedication to helping others.

The following were represented on the day. Scouts – 1st Gainsborough, 3rd Gainsborough, 6th Gainsborough, 14th Gainsborough, 18th Gainsborough, 1st Willingham, 2nd Market Rasen and 1st Beckingham. Guides – were 2nd Gainsborough, 5th Gainsborough, 6th Gainsborough, 1st Sturton, 1st Willingham and 1st Morton.
