SLIDESHOW: Lots to enjoy at village fun day...

POLICE and fire crews were out in full force in Walkeringham last weekend – although not on any official business.

The fearsome-looking 'officers' were part of a mammoth scarecrow competition – just one of the many exciting events featured in the village's third annual fun day.

Even Worzel Gummidge would have been impressed with this year's 23 entrants in the contest, which saw just four scarecrows scoop an official prize.

Judges Sheila Clarke and Anne Hennesay gave duo Grumpy and Sleep the top title, with Jacko, Freda and 999 taking the second, third and fourth prizes respectively.

There was also a variety of stalls and activities on offer for people of all ages, including an energetic dance display from local troupe Bedazzled.

Funds raised on the day have still to be counted and finalised, but the figure is expected to top 2,000 and will go towards the village hall and playing fields.

Resident Maynel Vessey, of High Street, said the weather soon brightened up to make a successful and enjoyable afternoon.

"It was great fun and people could go round looking at all the scarecrows," she said. "They were quite amazing and you approached some of them with awe and trepidation."

"I am just so glad the rain held off and the sun finally came out. The fun day was really well attended and it was great to see so many children enjoying themselves."
