Police praise for officers' good work
SHINING examples of the county's finest policing were celebrated at a special awards ceremony which recognised officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Family and friends also attended the West Divsion awards evening at Lincoln to watch the accolades being presented and stories of bravery, dedication and professionalism.
Asst Chief Constable Alec Wood paid tribute to the officers who had been singled out for the exceptional service they have provided to the county, and said they deserved their awards for exceeeding all expectations.
”These officers are outstanding examples of Policing with Pride – and they do it day in, day out,” he said.
Gainsborough and the surrounding area were well represented with a range of awards presented for a variety of impressive achievements – from preventing a suicide attempt to clamping down on rogue traders.
Sgt Paul Richardson and Cons Sonia Harris of Gainsborough were rewarded for their intervention after a man tried to jump into the River Trent on a freezing morning in October last year.
The man was on the wrong side of the safety barriers overlooking the river, and both officers had to work hard to prevent him from jumping off
Said Insp Lee Pache: ”This incident presented a very real risk to the officers’ lives but their actions are a testament to their courage and fortitude in saving the life of another.”
Sgt Guy Farmer and Cons Frank Amey, joined forces with South Yorkshire Police after a burglary in Upton and reports of stolen vehicles from Gainsborough and Carlton, near Worksop in February this year.
Said Insp Rod Brant: ”As a result of the officers’ determination, tenacity and attention to detail, together with first class liaison with South Yorkshire Police, two suspects were arrested and charged with seven offences of burglary and vehicle crime.”
And over in Hemswell, Cons Ian Cotton and PCSO Julie McFaul set up a joint operation with Trading Standards in March 2008 called Operation Flint, which aimed to eradicate counterfeit goods at Hemswell Market.
Over 80,000 bogus CDs and DVDs were seized, 13 search warrants executed and one trader was sent to prison – and there are 11 further cases pending.
Insp Brant said: ”Without the professionalism, commitment and team work demonstrated by these officers in co-ordinating patrols and obtaining intelligence, there is no doubt that this criminal activity would have continued.”
Other officer duos receiving accolades were Sgt Farmer and Constable Pearce, and Det Cons David Haddock and Det Cons Gail Hurley.
And Special Constable Donna Irving, of Gainsborough, received a confirmation certificate and praise for her work as a student officer – showing professionalism, empathy and enthusiasm.
