RETFORD based writer Paul Cookson visited Worksop College Preparatory School, Ranby House to teach a series of poetry workshops.

Famous for his poem Spill the Beans, Paul has sold more than half-a-million books with his poems appearing in more than 100 children’s books worldwide.

“Paul joined us as Poet in Residence following a popular and successful visit to us during Olympic Book Week. The pupils loved him,” said Head of English Mrs Wilkinson, who organised the workshops.

The aim for the workshops was to provide an opportunity for pupils to work with and gain writing experience from a professional and published writer.

Paul will continue working with the children throughout the year on themed poetry.

The best poems will be collected and professionally published in a Poetry Anthology which parents can purchase from the school.

“We will be holding a poetry performance evening in our Performing Arts Centre towards the end of the summer term, hosted by Paul, to enable parents to see and hear for themselves what the pupils have achieved during the year,” added Mrs Wilkinson.

“The children will be gaining experience not only with language use, but also oral presentation skills.”
