MP - Richard III should be buried in Worksop

RICHARD III should be buried in Worksop if remains currently being examined conclude they belong to the Yorkshire King.

That is what Bassetlaw MP John Mann told Parliament in the House of Commons today

Last month the remains were found in a Leicester car park and tests are trying to find out if they belong to the king, who lived in Middleham Castle, North Yorkshire.

It has already been suggested the monarch should be buried York Minster.

But John Mann favours a more local resting place - Worksop Priory.

“The great priory of Worksop, halfway between [Leicester and York], the end of the road of the forest and the centre of the kingdom of Richard III can provide the most appropriate final resting place for the king,” he said today.

Richard III was King of England for two years, from 1483 until his death in 1485 during the Battle of Bosworth Field.

He murdered his nephews to take the throne and his reign was marred by rebellion.

After his death his body was buried at the church of the Franciscan Friary in Leicester, known as the Greyfriars. But his whereabouts have been lost over time.
